diygaragedoorparts.com What type of garage door springs do I have on my door.
There are 2 types of garage door springs:
Torsion springs are on a bar above to door and wound up under tension. (see this video to learn how to measure to order the correct size ua-cam.com/video/p0XXx2Wb7nk/v-deo.html )
Extension springs are on the side of the track and stretch out as the door closes. (see our video on how to determine what size you need)

I would not do this without knowing the door weight. MIL-DTL-83420M says the minimum breaking strength for 3/32 cable is 920 lbs. Obviously you don't want to be anywhere near breaking strength for an overhead lift. ANSI/DASMA102 recommends a safety factor of 5. So, 368lbs door weight for 2 cables. Most doors this would work pretty good, but 3 of us couldn't lift my door so probably more than 368, maybe 350-450lbs. I just thought your 900 lbs rated is misleading and potentially dangerous. 920 lbs is the breaking strength, the working load limit for 2 cables is 368lbs. You can exceed the limit if you want, but I don't think you should do it blindly.

You're not even going to warn people on how dangerous it is to work with those springs and to use caution?!? One wrong move and those springs could snap and send thousands of pieces of shrapnel flying through the air. Or even the torsion rod. There are thousands of pounds of force behind those springs when tightened. If you don't have those rods in place when you loosen the bolts, those springs will fly loose and could break. If you don't know what you're doing, please do not do this yourself, have someone help you, or educate yourself well before doing this.

You was able to lift that door so easy manually. Incant do that. Does it mean my springs need adjustment? I've always heard you should be able to lift your door easy

i guess it could be a dumb question, but why is it necessary to loosen the spring and put the winding bar if the string is to be tigthened before working on the drum anyway?

Like others have mentioned, this video is prefect and should be the guideline for others who make “DIY” videos. It’s short and right to the point. There’s no nonsense stories, useless talking or “can’t find tools” filming, etc. Nicely done all the way around. 👍

11/9/23 I would check to see if the shaft can be pushed back so the black cover can slip on the shaft more. Loosen the Allen screws on the o ring on the shaft and see if the shaft can move back some so the black cover can fit better. Fixed mine

Hey Kyle thanks for your video instructions, I appreciate your professional expertise and the manner in which you demonstrate that. I appreciate also for being down to earth, and not like other/most UA-camrs who are arrogant and who just make constant condescending digs directed at those people who are just trying to learn something… right, I mean that’s exactly why you make these tutorial videos. You’re a good person I can tell, thank you again

I got ahead of myself when replacing the rollers, and I mistakenly removed the red screws from the bottom door bracket. (They were not red on my door like they are in other videos.) Luckily the cables onle pulled up the bracket about 4 inches. So I used a C-clamp to make sure it doesn't move any further or fly off from the tension. So what do I do now? How do I reattach the bracket and cable safely. I do not have the winding bars to secure the main coil. What can I use instead to secure the coil?

You really need some winding bars to back wind the springs. You can get some 1/2" cold rolled steel bars to use for a set.
